3、dstudywaspublished.Itwasbasedon22,000questionnairessenttoformergraduatestudentswhowereenrolledin24universitiesanditseemedtoshowmanypastfearstobegroundless.Thedropoutsratewasfoundtobe31percent,andinmostcasesthedropouts,whilenotcompletingthePhDrequirement,wento

4、ntoproductivework.Theyarenotonlydoingwellfinancially,but,accordingtothereport,arenotfarbelowtheincomelevelsofthosewhowentontocompletetheirdoctorates.Discussingthestudylastweek,Dr.Tuckersaidtheprojectwasinitiated“becauseoftheconcernfrequentlyexpressedbygraduat

5、efacultiesandadministratorsthatsomeoftheindividualswhodroppedoutofPhDprogramswerecapableofcompletingtherequirementforthedegree.AttritionatthePhDlevelisalsothoughttobeawasteofpreciousfacultytimeandadrainonuniversityresourcesalreadybeingusedtocapacity.Somepeopl

6、eexpressedtheopinionthattheshortageofhighlytrainedspecialistsandcollegeteacherscouldbereducedbypersuadingthedropoutstoreturntograduateschoolstocompletethePhD.“Theresultsofourresearch”Dr.Tuckerconcluded,“didnotsupporttheseopinions”.1.Lackofmotivationwastheprin
