alone;whereitgrows,therearemanymore,anditisasplendid
sight;andallthissplendorisgoodforsnails.Thegreatwhite
snails,whichgrandpeopleinoldentimesusedtohavemadeinto
fricassees;andwhentheyhadeatenthem,theywouldsay,"O,whata
deliciousdish!"forthese

thesesnailslivedonburdock-leaves,andforthemtheburdockwas
planted.
Therewasonceanoldestatewherenoonenowlivedtorequire
snails;indeed,theownershadalldiedout,buttheburdockstill
flourished;itgrewoverallthebedsandwalksofthegarden-its
growt

burdocks.Hereandtherestoodanappleoraplum-tree;butfor
this,nobodywouldhavethoughttheplacehadeverbeenagarden.It

thattheyweredescendedfromafamilywhichcamefromforeign
lands,andthatthewholeforesthadbeenplantedforthemandtheirs.

whichsomeoftheirrelationshadbeenboiledtilltheybecame
black,andwerethenlaidonasilverdish;butwhatwasdone
afterwardstheydidnotknow.Besides,theycouldnotimagine
exactlyhowitfelttobeboiledandplacedonasilverdish;butno
doubtitwassomethingveryfineand

cockchafer,northetoad,northeearth-worm,whomtheyquestioned
aboutit,wouldgivethemtheleastinformation;fornoneoftheir
relationshadeverbeencookedorservedonasilverdish.Theold
whitesnailswerethemostaristocraticraceintheworld,-they
