2、ARLES··In2006JonathanTorgovnik,anIsraeli-bornphotographer,travelledtoRwandawithareportertoinvestigatehowHIVhadbeenusedasaweaponofwarduringthe1994genocide.Thisatrocityleftmorethan800,000peopledead,butoneintervieweere
3、vealedanotheraspectofitsaftermath:“Thiswoman,” MrTorgovnikexplains, “describedhowherfamilywerekilledandhowshewasrapedandhowshe’dcontractedHIVasaresult.Andshementioned,inpassing,thatshehadbecomepregnantthroughtheserapesandhadaboy.”MrTorgovniksaystheinterviewkeptcomingbackto
4、himinthefollowingweeks,sohe“decidedtogotoRwandaandstartapersonalprojecttoinvestigatethisissue.”Hespentthenextthreeyearsinterviewingwomenwho’dhadachildafterbeingrapedbymilitiamen.Hephotographedthemwiththeirchildren,manyofwhomdon’tknowthetruthabouttheirparentage.In2009hepubl
5、ishedabookabouthisprojectcalled"IntendedConsequences",andinJulyhisexhibitionofthesamenamewontheDiscoveryprizeatoneofEurope’slargestphotographyfestivals—LesRencontresd’ArlesinFrance—whereitis onshowuntilSeptember23rd.“Thesewomenareostracised,” MrTorgovniksays. “Theyarerejec
6、tedbytheircommunitiesbecauseofthestigmaassociatedwithrape,associatedwithHIV,associatedwithhavingachildoftheenemy,sotospeak.” Butdespitetheirtrauma,anddespitetalkingtoamanandanoutsider,MrTorgovnikfoundthewomenheinterviewedsurprisinglycandid. “Ithinkthey’dkeptitinforsomanyye
7、arsthatwhensomeonewasfinallytheretocollecttheirtestimonies,theyactuallypleadedwithmetotelltheirstoriesbecausetheycannottellthemthemselves.”Theirtraumawasnotonlyharrowingtohearabout,buthardtophotograph. “Howdoyoudocumenttraumainpictures?” MrTorgovnikasks. “Theseexperiencesh
