2、ARLES··In2006JonathanTorgovnik,anIsraeli-bornphotographer,travelledtoRwandawithareportertoinvestigatehowHIVhadbeenusedasaweaponofwarduringthe1994genocide.Thisatrocityleftmorethan800,000peopled
3、ead,butoneintervieweerevealedanotheraspectofitsaftermath:“Thiswoman,” MrTorgovnikexplains, “describedhowherfamilywerekilledandhowshewasrapedandhowshe’dcontractedHIVasaresult.Andshementioned,inpassing,thatshehadbecomepregnantthroughtheserapesandhadabo
4、y.”MrTorgovniksaystheinterviewkeptcomingbacktohiminthefollowingweeks,sohe“decidedtogotoRwandaandstartapersonalprojecttoinvestigatethisissue.”Hespentthenextthreeyearsinterviewingwomenwho’dhadachildafterbeingrapedbymilitiamen.Hephotographedthemwiththei
5、rchildren,manyofwhomdon’tknowthetruthabouttheirparentage.In2009hepublishedabookabouthisprojectcalled"IntendedConsequences",andinJulyhisexhibitionofthesamenamewontheDiscoveryprizeatoneofEurope’slargestphotographyfestivals—LesRencontresd’ArlesinFrance—
6、whereitis onshowuntilSeptember23rd.“Thesewomenareostracised,” MrTorgovniksays. “Theyarerejectedbytheircommunitiesbecauseofthestigmaassociatedwithrape,associatedwithHIV,associatedwithhavingachildoftheenemy,sotospeak.” Butdespitetheirtrauma,anddespitet
7、alkingtoamanandanoutsider,MrTorgovnikfoundthewomenheinterviewedsurprisinglycandid. “Ithinkthey’dkeptitinforsomanyyearsthatwhensomeonewasfinallytheretocollecttheirtestimonies,theyactuallypleadedwithmetotelltheirstoriesbecausetheycannottellthemthemselv
8、es.”Theirtraumawasnotonlyharrowingtohearabout,buthardtophotograph. “Howdoyoudocumenttraumainpictures?” MrTorgovnikasks. “Theseexperienceshappenedmanyyearsago.” Hissolutionwastophotographhissubjectsimmediatelyafterhehadinterviewedthem,whentheiremotion
9、wasstillatthesurface.Photographingonfilmratherthandigitallyhelpedtoo. “Ihadtochangetherolloffilmevery12pictures,andasIwaschangingthefilmIcouldseetheyweremorerelaxed.Ittooktwoorthreerollsoffilmbeforetheywererelaxedwitheachotherandrelaxedwithme.”Forthe
