3、gesinthesecomponentscaneasilytobeconfusedwithstructuraldamage.Allthesegivethedamageassessmentofcomplexstructuressuchasbridgesastillchallengingtaskforbridgeengineers.Thispaperfirstlypresentsthedefinitionofstructuralhealthmonitoringsystemanditscomponents.Then,thefocusofthediscussionispl
4、acedonthefollowingsections:①thelaboratoryandfieldtestingresearchonthedamageassessment;②analyticaldevelopmentsofdamagedetectionmethods,including(a)signatureanalysisandpatternrecognitionapproaches,(b)modelupdatingandsystemidentificationapproaches,(c)neuralnetworksapproaches;and③sensorsa
5、ndtheiroptimumplacements.Thepredominanceandshortcomingsofeachmethodarecomparedandanalyzed.Recentexamplesofimplementationofstructuralhealthmonitoringanddamageidentificationaresummarizedinthispaper.Thekeyproblemofbridgehealthmonitoringisdamageautomaticdetectionanddiagnosis,anditisthemos
6、tdifficultproblem.Lastly,researchanddevelopmentneedsareaddressed.1IntroductionDuetoawidevarietyofunforeseenconditionsandcircumstance,itwillneverbepossibleorpracticaltodesignandbuildastructurethathasazeropercentprobabilityoffailure.Structuralaging,environmentalconditions,andreuseareexa
