3、onsforteachingmethodology.Theconclusioncallsforabalancedandflexibleviewofstudentuseofthemothertongue.Someavenuesforfurtherexplorationarealsosketched,inparticulartheneedtoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweentask-typesandmothertongueuse.IntroductionTask-basedappr
4、oachesseemwell-suitedforyoungadultlearners,particularlythosestudyinginESLcontexts.Insuchsettings,atask-basedapproachmayrepresentanopportunityforstudentstore-activatepreviouslytaughtstructuresandrefinelanguageoutput.Thesuitabilityoftask-basedteachingforschool
5、sseemslessclear-cut.HongKongwasanearlyadopteroftask-basedapproachesinschoolswithimplementationattheprimarylevelbeginninginthemid-1990sandcontinuingtodateinbothprimaryandsecondaryschools.Thispaper,drawingondatacollectedinHongKong,examinesanimportantissueinth
6、eimplementationoftask-basedapproaches,namelystudentuseofthemothertongue(MT).Thisisaperennialchallengeintheschoolforeignlanguageclassroom,worthrevisitinginthecontextoftask-basedteaching.MTusehaspotentiallybothpositiveandnegativeconsequences.TheMTmayusefullys
7、ervesocialandcognitivefunctions,includingtheconstructionofscaffoldedassistanceandcreatethroughcollaborativedialoguetheopportunityforlanguageacquisitiontotakeplace(AntonandDiCamilla1998;SwainandLapkin2000).Holliday(1994)arguesthatstudentsworkingingroupsorpai
