6、alebelieverofBuddhismwhohastakenthetonsureasanunhasdone,butcontinuestoliveasalaymemberofsociety.“Laynun”isthefemaleequivalentoflaypriest(nyudo).“Laynun”wasoftenaffixedtothenamesofwomenwhohadbeentonsuredandlivedalaylife.Nichigon.SheisthoughttohavebeeneitherarelativeofthelaypriestLaypriest:(J
7、pnnyudo)Onewhoistonsuredasapriestbutcontinuestoliveasalayman.InJapan,fromtheHeianperiod(794-1185)on,adistinctionwasmadebetweenlaypriestsandthosewhoformallyrenouncedthesecularworldandlivedintemples.ThetermlaypriestisatranslationoftheJapanesetermnyudo,whic
