3、btinSemele'smind.Curious,SemeledemandedofZeusthatherevealhimselfinallhisgloryasproofofhisgodhood.ThoughZeusbeggedhernottoaskthis,shepersistedandheagreed.Thereforehecametoherwreathedinboltsoflightning;mortals,however,couldnotlookuponanundisguisedgodwithoutdying,andsheperishedintheens
4、uingblaze.ZeusrescuedthefoetalDionysusbysewinghimintohisthigh.Afewmonthslater,DionysuswasbornonMountPramnosintheislandofIkaria,whereZeuswenttoreleasethenow-fully-grownbabyfromhisthigh.Inthisversion,Dionysusisbornebytwo"mothers"(SemeleandZeus)beforehisbirth,hencetheepithetdimētōr(oft
5、womothers)associatedwithhisbeing"twice-born".IntheCretanversionofthesamestory,whichDiodorusSiculusfollows,DionysuswasthesonofZeusandPersephone,thequeenoftheGreekunderworld.Diodorus'sourcesequivocallyidentifiedthemotherasDemeter.AjealousHeraagainattemptedtokillthechild,thistimebysend
