2、ctivesonthedeterminantsoftrustincontemporarysocieties.Isasocietyslevelofgeneralizedtrustafunctionofitsethniccomposition,orofitstypeofgover-nanceandpoliticalsystem?Theargumentthatsocialdiversity(ethnic,linguistic,andreligious)leadstolowerlevelsoftrust,atleastintheshortrun,isassessedwithcross-na
3、tionaldata(N=98).Twohypothesesderivedfromthisperspectivearenotconfirmed.Thealternativerationalgovernanceargument,whichholdsthattrustisafunctionofrationalgovernance,stabledemocracy,andcivilrightsisalsoassessed.Threehypothesesderivedfromthispoliticalperspectiverevealmixedresults.Thefindingshighlig
