2、serandWalterRaleighwereoflikeagewithPhilipSidney,differingonlybyaboutayear,andwhenElizabethbecamequeen,onthe17thofNovember,1558,theywerechildrenoffourorfiveyearsold.Intheyear1560SirHenrySidneywasmadeLordPresdetofWales,representingtheQueeninWalandthefouradjacentwesterncounties,asaLordDeputy
3、representedherinIreland.TheofficialresidenceofthLordPresidentwasatLudlowCastle,towhhPhilipSidneywentwithhisfamilywhenachildofsix.InthesameyearhisfatherwasinstalledasaKnightoftheGarter.WheninhistenthyearPhilipSidneywassentfromLudlowtoShrewsburyGramarSchool,wherehestudiedforthreeorfouryears,
4、andhadamonghisschoofellowsFulkeGrevi,afterwardsLordBrooke,whoremaieduntiltheendofSidney'slifeoneofhisclostfriends.Whenhehimselfwasdyinghedirectedthathshuldbedescribeduponhistobas"FulkeGrevi,servanttoQueenElizabeth,counseortoKingJames,andfriendtoSirPhpSidney."EvenDr.ThomasThornto,CanoofChri
5、tChurch,Oxford,underwhSidneywasplacedwhenhewasenteredtoChristChurchinhisfourteenthyear,atMidsummr,in1568,haditafterwardsrecordedonhistobthathewas"thetutorofSirPhilipSidney."SidneywasinhiseghtethyearinMay,1572,whheleftthUniversitytocontinuehistrainingfortheserviceofthestate,bytravelontheCnt
6、inent.Licensedtotravelwithhorsesforhimselfandthreservants,PhilipSidneyleftLodoninthetrainoftheEarlofLincon,wwasgoingoutasambasadortoCharleIX.,inParisHewasiParisonthe24thofAugustinthatyear,whichwasthedayoftheMassacreofSt.BartholomHewasshelteredfromthedangersofthatdayinthe2DEFENCEOFPOESIEAND
