2、amilyofthreesonsandfourdaughters.EdmundSpenserandWalterRaleighwereoflikeagewithPhilipSidney,differingonlybyaboutayear,andwhenElizabethbecamequeen,onthe17thofNovember,1558,theywerechildrenoffourorfiveyearsold.Intheyear1560SirHenrySidneywasmadeLordPresidentofWales,representingtheQ
3、ueeninWalesandthefouradjacentwesterncounties,asaLordDeputyrepresentedherinIreland.TheofficialresidenceoftheLordPresidentwasatLudlowCastle,towhichPhilipSidneywentwithhisfamilywhenachildofsix.InthesameyearhisfatherwasinstalledasaKnightoftheGarter.WheninhistenthyearPhilipSidneywass
4、entfromLudlowtoShrewsburyGrammarSchool,wherehestudiedforthreeorfouryears,andhadamonghisschoolfellowsFulkeGreville,afterwardsLordBrooke,whoremaineduntiltheendofSidney'slifeoneofhisclosestfriends.Whenhehimselfwasdyinghedirectedthatheshouldbedescribeduponhistombas"FulkeGreville,ser
5、vanttoQueenElizabeth,counsellortoKingJames,andfriendtoSirPhilipSidney."EvenDr.ThomasThornton,CanonofChristChurch,Oxford,underwhomSidneywasplacedwhenhewasenteredtoChristChurchinhisfourteenthyear,atMidsummer,in1568,haditafterwardsrecordedonhistombthathewas"thetutorofSirPhilipSidne
6、y."SidneywasinhiseighteenthyearinMay,1572,whenhelefttheUniversitytocontinuehistrainingfortheserviceofthestate,bytravelontheContinent.Licensedtotravelwithhorsesforhimselfandthreeservants,PhilipSidneyleftLondoninthetrainoftheEarlofLincoln,whowasgoingoutasambassadortoCharlesIX.,inP
