4、atedproperlyintheearlystageofdataprocessing.TheresultsofthetwomethodsarepresentedusingselectedGRIPdataandcomparedwiththedropsondedataforverificationpurposes.Keywords:Noisewhitening,coherentlidar,GRIP,windprofile,DAWNAIR1.INTRODUCTIONThefundamentalconceptofwindprofilingbasedonlidarretu

5、rnsisDopplershift(DS)estimationinwindspeedanddirectionestimationusingmorethanonelineofsight(LOS)oflidarbeam[7].InDSestimation,itinvolvesthespectralanalysesoflidarreturnsusingfastFouriertransform(FFT).TheDSestimationiscloselyrelatedtothepeakdetectionprocessoflidarreturnspectra,whichare

6、corruptedbyvariouskindsofnoise,mosteminentlytheinstrumentnoise.Thispaperdiscussestheadverseimpactsofthebackgroundnoiseinpeakdetection,remediestocompensatethem,andsamplesoftheresultsofsuchcompensations.Aspartofsuchefforts,twonoisewhiteningmethodsarepresentedandtheirimpactsareshowninfin

7、alwindproducts.ThelidardatawereacquiredbytheDopplerAerosolWind(DAWN)AIRlidarinstrumentduringthesummerof2010aspartoftheNASAGenesisandRapidIntensificationProcess(GRIP)hurricanecampaign.Thegeneraloverviewofthedataacquisitionandprocessingsoftwareisalsopresentedinthispaper[1-2].2.AIRBORNEW
