3、LMICs).1Since2014,mobileoperatorshaveconnected700millionnewsubscribersandanotherbillionhavegainedaccesstotheinternetthroughamobilephone,manyforthefirsttime.21.7billionwomennowownamobilephoneinLMICsandoverabillionusemobileinternet.Asthereachofmobilegrows,itisbecomingani

4、ncreasinglypowerfultoolfordeliveringlife-enhancinginformation,servicesandopportunitiestomillionswhohavenothadtheopportunitytoaccessthembefore.Despitethisgrowth,mobileownershipstillremainsfarfromuniversal.AcrossLMICs,15percentofadultsstilldonotownamobilephoneand45percen

5、tdonotusemobileinternet.Theseindividualstendtobelongtothemostmarginalisedgroups:theyaredisproportionatelyrural,illiterateandolder.Theyarealsopredominantlyfemale.Whilemobilephoneownershipandmobileinternetusehaveincreasedsignificantlyamongwomen,thereisstillapersistentgen

6、dergap.Women’slowerlevelsofmobileownershipandusenotonlyreflectexistinggenderinequalities,butalsothreatentocompoundthem.Ifthemobilegendergapisnotaddressed,womenriskbeingleftbehindassocietiesandeconomiesdigitise.Thereareseveraldistinctbarrierstomobileownershipandusethata

7、ffectadisproportionatenumberofwomen.Theseimpedimentstouniversalmobileconnectivitywillnotbeovercomeontheirown;concertedeffortandcooperationwillberequiredtodrivedigitalinclusionforwomen.Itisimportantforallstakeholderstotakeactiontodeliverthesignificantbenefitsofmobilean
