3、tion.TherehasalsobeensomediscussionregardingthedesirabilityofalowerstrengthHPS,e.g.,HPS345W.Bridgesteelswithyieldstrengthsof345,485and690MPahavebeenavailablefordecadessoitisclearthatstrengthalonedoesnotmakea“highperformance”steel;·Improvedtoughnessforpracticalbridge
4、environments,usuallyexpressedasmeeting“Zone3"requirements,i.e.,47Joulesat-23°C;·Increasedweldability,oftendescribedintermsofreducedpreheatandinterpasstemperaturerequirements;·Nodetrimentalchangestootherimportantproperties;·WeatheringpropertiesatleastequaltotheolderG
5、rade485W.Statedmoresimply,HPShasimprovementsinoneormoreofthefollowingproperties:strength,weldability,ductility,corrosionresistance,fatigueresistance,fracturetoughness,fabricability,orformability.TheHPScurrentlyavailablehasayieldstrengthof485MPaandisproducedthroughim
6、provementsinbothchemistryandcontrolofthecoolingprocess.TheFHWArecognizedthatresearchwasnecessarytoconsiderstructuralformswhichcouldcapitalizeontheimprovementsandpropertiesanticipatedasthenewHPSwasbeingdeveloped,andtoidentifydesignandspecificationissueswhichwouldhave
7、tobeaddressedtoutilizethenewmaterial.Whilethecurrentmaterialhasayieldpointof485MPa,considerationwasgiventosteelswithyieldpointsashighas985MPa.Ifstrengthsofthislevelaredevelopedinthefuture,newinnovativestructuralsystemswouldbeneededtoutilizethefullpotentialoftheimpro
