2、lished7July2005Weinvestigatethejammingtransitioninpackingsofemulsionsandgranularmaterialsviamoleculardy-namicssimulations.Theemulsionmodeliscomposedoffrictionlessdropletsinteractingvianonlinearnormalforcesobtainedusingexperimentaldataacquiredbyconfo

3、calmicroscopyofcompressedemulsionssystems.GranularmaterialsaremodeledbyHertz-MindlindeformablesphericalgrainswithCoulombfriction.Inbothcases,weÞndpower-lawscalingforthevanishingofpressureandexcessnumberofcontactsasthesystemapproachesthejammingtransit

4、ionfromhighvolumefractions.WeÞndthattheconstructionhistoryparam-etrizedbythecompressionrateduringthepreparationprotocolhasastrongeffectonthemicromechanicalpropertiesofgranularmaterialsbutnotonemulsions.Thisleadsthegranularsystemtojamatdifferentvolume

5、fractionsdependingonthehistories.IsostaticityisfoundinthepackingsclosetothejammingtransitioninemulsionsandingranularmaterialsatslowcompressionratesandinÞnitefriction.Heterogeneityofinterpar-ticleforcesincreasesasthepackingsapproachthejammingtransitio
