3、ecttheirEnglishlanguageproficiency.Lexicalcohesion,asthetextureoftext,playsanimportantroleintheconstructionofsurfacecoherenceanddiscoursecoherenceofEnglishargumentativewriting.BasedonHallidayandHasan’s(1976,1985)theoryoflexicalcohesionaswellasHeoy’s(1991)classificationsoflexicalcohesion,thisth

4、esisfocusesonsixsubtypesoflexicalcohesions,namely,simplerepetition,complexrepetition,synonym,antonym,hyponymandgeneralword.WrittenEnglishCorpusofChineseLearner(WECCL2.0)wasadoptedasmaincorpusandTheLouvainCorpusofNativeEnglishEssays(LOCNESS)asreferencecorpus.Inordertoexplorethedistributionandde

5、velopmentaltrendoflexicalcohesionsofChineselearners,threespecificquestionsareaddressedasfollows:(1)WhatisthedistributionofsixsubtypesoflexicalcohesionsinWECCL?(2)WhatarethesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenLOCNESSandWECCLintermsofsixsubtypesoflexicalcohesions?(3)Whattheacross-gradedevelopmental

6、trendoflexicalcohesioncanbeevidencedinWECCL?Theresearchproceduresareshowedbelow:Sub-corpusGeneratorwasfirstlyusedtoextractthelearners’corpuswiththetopicof“computerandtechnology”,meanwhilethesub-corporainvolvingstudents’compositiontextsofGrade1-3aregenerated;thenthethreesubtypesoflexicalcohesio
