2、athatmayotherwisebeoverlookedorrequireagreatdealoftimetomap.Thequalityofattributedisplaysisdirectlyproportionaltothequalityoftheinputseismicdata.Ideally,allamplitude,phase,andtraveltimedistortioneffectsduetonear-surfaceandoverburdenheterogeneitiesaswellast
3、hoseintroducedbyacquisitionandprocessingshouldbeoptimallyhandled,eveniftheycannotbetotallyeliminated.Inpractice,evenwithcarefulacquisition,processing,andimag-ing,ourdatawillstillexhibitacertainlevelofnoise.Weshowhowstructure-orientedfilteringcaneliminatera
4、ndomnoise,withtheprincipalcomponentfilterprovidingbetterresultsthanthemorefamiliarmeanandmedianfilters.Theacquisitionfootprintisaformofcoherent,ratherthanrandom,noiseandrequiresadifferentfilteringapproach,ideallyintheprestackdomainpriortostacking.Finally,w
5、eshowthatdifferentimplementationsofagivenattributecanmakeadifference,withenergyratiocoherenceprovidingmorerobustimagesthansemblance.WeillustratethesefindingsthroughapplicationtoasuiteofexamplesfromAlberta,Canada.Introductionismorecontinuous,thereisalwaysth
6、edangerofremovingWiththeexceptionofAVOandanisotropicvelocityanalysis,signalbyfilteringandsoapplicationofsuchafiltermayallattributeworkisdoneondatathathavebeenmigrated.bediscouragedforcaseswheremappingfracturesorotherSuchseismicdatavolumesareusuallycontamin
7、atedbybothsubtlediscontinuitiesaretheobjective.Gulunayetal.(1993)randomandcoherentnoise,evenwhenthedatahavebeenandLinvilleandMeek(1995)designeddipfiltersthatfirstmigratedreasonablywellandaremultiple-free.Forseismicestimatedthedipofthemostcoherentnoiseevent
