2、survey,whichaskedabouteducation,geographiclocation,practiceandprescriptivepatterns,andofcourse,currentsalary.SurveyswereacceptedbetweenAugustandDecemberof2005.Inadditiontoansweringoursurveyquestions,manyNPsofferedtheirowninsightsintotheprofession.Theircommentsrevealedbothsuccessandfrustrati
3、onincertainareasofpractice,particularlycompensation.Salaryquestionstriggeredthevastmajorityofcomments,rangingfromthosewhohaveseenanincreaseinthesalaryofferedaswellasanincreaseinthenumberofjoboffers,toonewhoclaimedherhourlywagewas$8lessthanwhatshecouldearnasahospitalcriticalcarenurse.Arecent
4、graduate,whowasinthetopofherclassinthetop-ratedFNPprogramintheUnitedStates,hadthistosay:"IthasbeennexttoimpossibleformetofindanNPjobinthecitywhereIlivethatpaysenoughformetocovermylivingexpensesandstudentloans."CompensationandemploymentremaintopconcernsformanyNPs.Salary,Education,andaGenderG
5、apTheaverageannualsalaryforNPsworkingfull-timewas$70,960;9.4%reportedsalariesmorethan$95,000,andonly2.8%reportedsalariesof$35,000orless.Salariesvariedbasedongeographiclocation,withthehighestaverageannualsalariesinurbanareas($74,510)andtheMountainStates($77,070),andthelowestinruralareas($68,
6、370)andtheEastNorthCentralStates($68,140).TheaveragehourlyrateforNPsworkingpart-timewas$35.10,and2.8%reportedearningmorethan$50perhour.Experiencewasonlypartlyrewardedwithhighercompensation.ThosewhohadbeenNPsformorethan20yearsearnedanaveragesalaryof$77,460comparedwith$67,850forthosewith1to2y
7、earsofexperience.However,thisamountstoa"reward"oflessthan$10,000fornearlytwodecadesofexperienceRespondentsfaredsomewhatbetterwhenitcametoeducationandcompensation.Therewasmorethana$30,000differenceinaveragesalarybetweenthosewithadiplomaandthosewithadoctor
