3、haracteristicsofthefirmsuchassizeormembershipofamultinationalcompany.Othersarerelatedtotheenvironment,suchastypeofproductmanufacturedandstrategicpriorities.Anothergroupoffactorsconsideredarelinkedtohumanresourcesissues,suchastheencouragementofemployeeinvolvementandunions.Finall
4、y,therelationshipbetweentheincidenceof5Sandtheuseofadvancedmanufacturingtechnologiesandqualityprogrammesisstudied.Structuralfactors:firmsizeandmembershipofamultinationalgroup.Largerfirmsenjoylargerfinancialandhumanresources,sothattheyhavebetterconditionsfortheintroductionofnewtec
5、hniques(ShahandWard,2003).Gappetal.(2008)indicatetheenormouseffortrequiredinachieving5Ssimultaneouslywithtotalproductivemaintenance(TPM),sothatsmall-to-mediumorganizationsmayresistadoptingthismethodologyduetoeconomiesofscale.Theempiricalevidenceon5Suselinkedtothesizeofthefirmis
6、veryscarce.WarwoodandKnowles(2004)carriedoutastudyintheUKandanalysedtheimplementationof5Susingasampleof39manufacturingplants.Theydidnotfindastatisticallysignificantrelationshipbetweensizeand5Simplementationlevel.Incontrast,Scottetal.(2009)foundthatintheCanadianfoodindustrymedium
