3、rnismlies,asIseeit,intheuseofcharacteristicmethodsofadisciplinetocriticisethedisciplineitself,notinordertosubvertitbutinordertoentrenchitmorefirmlyinitsareaofcompetence.Kantusedlogictoestablishthelimitsoflogic,andwhilehewithdrewmuchfromitsoldjurisdiction,logicwasleftallth
4、emoresecureinwhatthereremainedtoit.Theself-criticismofModernismgrowsoutof,butisnotthesamethingas,thecriticismoftheEnlightenment.TheEnlightenmentcriticizedfromtheoutside,thewaycriticisminitsacceptedsensedoes;Modernismcriticizesfromtheinside,throughtheproceduresthemselveso
5、fthatwhichisbeingcriticized.Itseemsnaturalthatthisnewkindofcriticismshouldhaveappearedfirstinphilosophy,whichiscriticalbydefinition,butasthe19thcenturyworeon,itenteredmanyotherfields.Amorerationaljustificationhadbeguntobedemandedofeveryformalactivity,andKantianself-criticism
6、,whichhadariseninphilosophyinanswertothisdemandinthefirstplace,wascalledoneventuallytomeetandinterpretitinareasthatlayfarfromphilosophy.Weknowwhathashappenedtoanactivitylikereligion,whichcouldnotavailitselfofKantian,immanent,criticisminordertojustifyitself.Atfirstglancethe
7、artsmightseemtohavebeeninasituationlikereligionʼs.HavingbeendeniedbytheEnlightenmentalltaskstheycouldtakeseriously,theylookedasthoughtheyweregoingtobeassimilatedtoentertainmentpureandsimple,andentertainmentitselflookedasthoughitweregoingtobeassimilated,likereligion,tothe
