3、ionalfirmstowardshost-countrymarketsbasedonthetheoreticalbackgroundprovidedbythetheoryofindustrialorganization.Thispartoftheliteratureusingmainlydataatindustryandindividualfirmlevelhasbuiltontheso-calledgravitymodels,estimatingtheeffectsofeconomicintegrationinlargecross-sec
4、tionsofcountries.ThesegravityequationsestimatetheclassoftheoreticalmodelsderivedmostlyfromtheKKmodels6and,tosomeextent,fromaproximity-concentrationtrade-off,wherefirmsdecidetoserveaforeignmarketeitherasanexporter(viatrade)orasamultinationalenterprise(viaforeignaffiliatessal
5、es).Becauseofdataavailabilityproblems,thelattercanbeproxiedbystocksofFDIratherthantheforeignaffiliatessalesitself.However,thisapproachhasbeencriticizedbothfromaneconometricandatheoreticalpointofview.Ontheonehand,theuseofstaticpanelshasseriouseconometricflawsand,ontheotherha
6、nd,itconsiderstheintegrationeffectsinastaticway,neglectingthefactthatthephenomenonisintrinsicallydynamic.Inordertoovercomethesepitfallssomeauthorshaveproposedalternativelyapplyingeithercomputablegeneralequilibriumanalysis(Helpmanetal.2003)ordynamicpanels(Egger2001).Theempir
