4、HELATERMIDDLEAGESClarissaW.Atkinson*Abstract:Sincethepatristicage,Christianshaveheldambivalentnotionsaboutthemeaningofvirginityandthestatusofthevirgin.IntheearlyMiddleAges,aphysiologicaldefinitionprevailed;afterthethirteenthcentury,therewasanin-creasingtendencytointerpret

5、virginityinmoralandpsychologicalterms—the"true"virginwascharacterizedbypurityandhumility.Certainwomenwhowerewivesandmotherswerecalledtovocationsofspecialholiness,whichmightincludesevereasceticpractices,pilgrimage,andmysticalcommunionwithGod.Someofthesewomensufferedp

6、ainfulconflictovertheirmaritalstatusandfamilyties,buttheirexperienceandreputationsmarkedsignificantchangesinChristianideasaboutsexualityandfamilylife.WhenLutherarguedthatthevirginwasnotnecessarilythe"best"Christian,hearguedwithinatraditionthathadwidenedandexpandedduringth
