2、cesrelatedtouse,includingaddiction.Determiningifusageisproblematicormerelyahabitisofspecialinterestforcollegestudents,whoareamongtheheaviestusersofthesite.Therefore,thisresearchinvestigatedtheconsequencesofSNSusebystudentsatalarge,Midwesternuniversity.Threemodelsofproblematicinter

3、netuse—thesocialskill(Caplan,2005),socio-cognitive(LaRose,Lin,&Eastin,2003),andintegrated(LaRose,Kim,&Peng,2009)models—weretestedtoseewhichmodelbestexplainedthenegativesocialconsequencesarisingfromhabitualSNSuse.Resultsfromasurveyof180collegestudentsindicatethattheintegratedmodele

5、usgrowthofsocialnetworksites(SNS)inrecentyearshascapturedtheattentionofusers,themedia,andresearchers.Withinafive-yearperiod,sitessuchasFacebookhaveattractedhundredsofmillionsofusersworldwide.Muchoftheattentionsurroundingthesesitesfocusesontheirprimaryaudience—youngadults—andstudie

6、shaverevealedhighlevelsofuseamongteens(Lenhart,Madden,Smith,&Macgill,2007),collegestudents(Ellison,Steinfield,&Lampe,2007;Smith,Salaway,&Caruso,2009),andyoungadultsgenerally(Lenhart,2009).Thesesitesprovideuserswithoutletsforbothcommunicationandentertainment,andthussiteuseformanyis

7、high.Facebook(2009)reportsthat50%ofactiveusersloginonagivendayand,amongcollegestudents,onestudyfoundthatusersspendmorethanonehourperdayonthesite(Steinfield,Ellison,&Lampe,2008).Nielson(2009)recentlyreportedthatfully17%ofInternetuserstimespentonlinewasdevotedtoSNSsandblogs,tripling
