3、cholar,buthepublishedtwobooksonothersubjectstowhichwemusthererefer.HewentasayoungmantoSpainandwroteapleasantlivelyaccountofhisholidaycalledGazpacho:gazpachobeingthenameofacertaincoldsoupwhichheateandappearstohaveenjoyedamongthepeasantsofAndalusia;indeedheappears
4、tohaveenjoyedeverything.Eightyearslater,asaresultofaholidayinGreece,hepublishedasecondbook,Peloponnesus.Peloponnesusisagraverworkandaduller.Greecewasaseriousplaceinthosedays,moreseriousthanSpain,besides,ClarkhadbynownotonlytakenOrdersbutbecomePublicOrator,andhew
5、as,aboveall,travellingwithDr.Thompson,thethenMasterofthecollege,whowasnotatallthesortofpersontobeinvolvedinacoldsoup.Thejestsaboutmulesandfleasareconsequentlyfew,andweareincreasinglyconfrontedwiththeremainsofclassicalantiquityandthesitesofbattles.Whatsurvivesint
6、hebook-apartfromitslearning-isitsfeelingforGreekcountryside.ClarkalsotravelledinItalyandPoland.Toturntohisacademiccareer.HeplannedthegreatCambridge2E.M.ForsterAspectsofthenovelShakespeare,firstwithGlover,thenwithAldisWright(bothlibrariansofTrinity),and,helpedbyA
7、ldisWright,heissuedthepopularGlobeShakespeare.HecollectedmuchmaterialforaneditionofAristophanes.Healsopublishedsomesermons,butin1869hegaveupHolyOrders-which,bytheway,willexemptusfromexcessiveorthodoxy.LikehisfriendandbiographerLeslieStephen,likeHenrySidgwickando
