2、rmousoutputsincethattime,however,hasmadesuchataskimpossibleinaliteralsenses.Eventhemostpatientandploddingstudent,tabulatingforhisdoctoratedegree,wouldsinkappalledbeforetheherculeantaskofselectingthehundredworstfromthethousandssufficientlypoor.Thecausesforthisunprecedentederuptionofin
3、feriorliteraturehavebeenseveral,andtheinventionoftheAmericantypewritingmachineissurelynottheleastofthem.WhenoneofthefirstofthesemachineswasshowntoGeorgeEliotbyanOxfordprofessor,sheexclaimedwithpropheticfervor:"Ah,Icanseethatitwillberesponsibleformanyabadbook,andwehavepooronesenoughas
4、itis."Therecanbenodoubt,thatthemerefacilitatingofthemechanicallaborofauthorshiphasinducedmanyyoungpeoplewhowereotherwiseunemployedtotrytheirhandsatliterature,andonlytoooftentheyhaveproducedwhatotheridleyoungsterslikethemselvesfoundreadableenough.Aclassofephemeralfictionhasresultedwhi
5、chmightwellbecalledthatofthestenographers'school,consistingofnovelsmadebythealmostunassistedeffortsofthemachines.Thegreatincreaseofpublishingfirms,manyofwhicharefranklyandsolelyinterestedinsatisfyingthelowestelementofthereadingpublic,hashad,nodoubt,muchtodowiththisplagueofbookswhich,
