1、1AdjectivesandboundednessCaritaParadis*AbstractThispaperexaminesthesignificanceoftheschematicdomainofBOUNDEDNESSinadjectives.Itisproposedthatboundednessinadjectivesisafundamentalcharacteristicassociatedwithgradability.Cross-categorialcorrespondencesaremadetonounsand
2、verbs,whereboundednessisafeatureofcountabilityandaktionsartrespectively.Twobasictypesofgradableadjectivesaredistinguished:thosewhichareassociatedwithaboundaryandthosewhicharenot.Itisalsoshownthatitispossibletochangetheconfigurationofadjectivesintermsofboundednessthr

5、y1988,Jackendoff1991,Frawley1992,Verkuyl1993,Depraetere1995,Brinton1998).Cross-categorialcorrespondenceshavebeenrecognizedbetweencountandnon-countfeaturesinnouns(car,mistakevs.milk,information),andcontinuousandnon-continuousfeaturesinverbs(know,hate,playvs.arrive,di
6、e,cough),inthatcountnounsandnon-continuousverbsarebounded,whilenon-countnounsandcontinuousverbsareunbounded.Boundednessinnounsisassociatedwithcountability,whichisafundamentalfeatureofnounsasentitiesormass(count/non-count).Boundednessinverbsisrelatedtoafundamentalpro
7、pertyofverbs,i.e.thetypeofsituationexpressedbytheverb(theaktionsart)asstatesorevents(continuous/non-continuous,ortelic/non-telic).Forbothnounsandverbsthedichotomybetweenboundednessandunboundednessisrelatedtoabasicnotionalcharacteristicofthecategories.Thepurposeofthe
