3、intainedonlybytheclientsandthemulticastservicefacilitatesatomicstatetransferfromexistingclientstonewmembers.Inthispaper,wearguethat,inordertosupportcollaborativeapplicationsinInternet-typeenvironments,acopyofthegroup'sstateshouldalsobemaintainedbythemu

4、lticastservice.Weshowthatbymaintainingacopyofgroup'sstate,themulticastservicecanprovideconsistentlyfastgroup-joinandstatetransfertimewhenbothslowandfastclientsarepresentorwhenclientsareunreliable

5、acrucialrequirementincollaborative,multi-userapplication

6、swhereusersmaydynamicallyjoinandleaveacollaborativesessionandexpectpredictablejointimesandinteractiveresponsetimeeveninthepresenceofsloworunreliableclients.Weshowthattheoverheadsincurredbyamulticastserviceinmanagingeachgroup'ssharedstatecanbemademinima

7、landthatthemulticastservicedoesnothavetobeawareofthesemanticsofthegroup'sstate.Wepresentthedesignofsuchamulticastservice,presentperformanceresults,anddiscusshowitmeetsthevariousneedsofcollaborativeapplications.1IntroductionAswithtraditionalsystemsfordi
