2、erseperformancerequirements—hasstagnatedsincethecommercialfailureofvideo-on-demandsystemsinthe1990s.However,thepasttwoyearshaveseenanaccelerationinthedevelopmentanddeploymentofseveralnewtechniquesaimedatweb-basedmultimediaapplications.Thesetechnologieshaveopened
3、upafertileresearchgroundfornewfilesystemoptimizationsandrekindledinterestinmultimediafilesystems.Inthispaper,wede-scribesomeofthesetechnologytrends,examinetheirimplicationsonfilesystemdesign,andpresentasamplingofthenewresearchproblemsthatariseduetothesetechnologica
4、lchanges.Basedontheseobservations,weargueforarenewedeffortindesigningnext-generationmultimediafilesystems.Considerthefollowingtechnologytrendsthatarefuelingthegrowthofweb-basedmultimediaapplications.Proliferationofstreamingmediacontent:Althoughenvisagedintheearl
5、y1990sinthecontextofvideo-on-demandservers,itisonlyinthepasttwoyearsthatstreamingmediahasgainedwidespreaduse(seeTable1).Today,anincreasingfractionofwebsitesprovidecontentinRealAudio/Video,Quicktime,orWindowsMediaformats.AudiofilesinMP3formatareimmenselypopular(al
6、thoughillegal)onmostuniversitycampuses.ThistrendisonlylikelytoacceleratewiththeadventofinexpensivemultimediaPCsandwidelyavailable,freesoftwaredecoders.Broadbandtothehome:Concurrenttothegrowinguseofstreamingmedia,technologiessuchascablemodemsanddigitalsubscriber
7、lines(DSL)haveemerged,whichpromisehigh-speedInternetaccesstohomeusers.Incontrasttotheslow56Kbpsanalogmodemspeeds,thesetechnologiesprovideeithera10Mbpssharedconnection(incaseofcablemodems)ora384Kbpsdedicatedconnection(incaseofDSLmodems).Table2depictstheprojectedg
8、rowthofuserswithhigh-speedInternetaccess.Thebroadavailabilityofhigherbandwidthconnectionsisresultinginincreasinguseofbandwidth-starvedapplicationssuchas3Dmulti-player
