2、nyauthorspreferthetermTanka^%.andsomedistinguishthesefromHoklo,Swatow,Cantoneseandotherboat-dwellinggroups,butevenifthesebasiclinguisticdistinctionsaremadewearenotleftwithaTankawhichisauniqueandhomogeneousgroup.TheTanka,bytheirownadmissionandbysuchevidenceastheirspeech,formsubgroupswhichdiffera

3、tleastinminorfeatures.TheHokloandSwatowareeasytoidentifyasseparatelinguisticentities,butprobablytheypreservevariationswithintheirownparticulardialectgroups.InordertoeliminatewhatIconsidertobemisleadingterminology,andtobringthetermsclosertoprobabilitiessuggestedbymypresentresearch,IwillfollowMis

4、sBarbaraWardandusethetermBoatPeopletorefertoallthosewhopermanentlyresideonboatsandusetheseboatsinwaterbasedoccupations.ThistermisoccupationalorculturalandincludesgroupswhichcanbesubdividedlinguisticallyintoHoklo,Swatow,Cantonese,andpossiblyothers.IwillnotmakeregularuseofthetermTanka,partlybecau

5、seitisoffensivetothosetowhomitisregularlyapplied,andpartlybecausemydataindicatethatthegroupknownasTankaareatbestmerelyasubgroupoftheCantonese-speakingBoatPeople.Admittedly,finalwordonthisterminologywillrequireanumberofstudiesofthetypediscussedhere,andthisispreciselythelong-rangeresearchwhichIpr

6、opose.IfmoreoftheHongKongBoatPeoplearegiventhecarefulstudywhichMissWardgavethoseinKauSai,itwillbeamucheasiermattertosolvesomeofthequestionsabouttheirorigins.Withthehopethatthisresearchwillbedoneinthefuture,IsuggestaprojectdesignedtoapproachasmanyofthelocalBoatPeopleaspossibleJournaloftheRoyalAs
