5、OREWORD•••ONEOFTHEHOPEFULSIGNSintheseotherwisehectictimesinwhichwearelivingisthelong-overduerealizationoftheneedformutualunderstandingbetweenthepeoplesoftheEastandthoseoftheWest.Genuineunderstandingofpeoplewhoareseparatedfromusbygreatdistancesorwhodifferfromusinlanguage,inwayoflife
6、,insocialcustom,isdifficulttoachieve,evenforthosewhoaresincerelydedicatedtothistask.Suchunderstandingisvital—humanly,intellectually,practically—butitcannotbeachievedthroughanysuperficialassessmentofwordsoractionswhichareoftenunrevealingorpossiblyevenmisleading.Itcanbeachievedonlyth
