4、participateinsociallifeandcommunicatewiththehearing，theneedsforSignedlanguageInterpreting(SLI)thatrendersSLservicesbetweenthehearingandthedeafarehighlightedandpromoted，particularlywhenSLlwasrecognized嬲aprofessionin1960sinthewest．However,theprocessoftheprofessionalizationofSLhasbeens

5、lowcomparedwiththatoftraditionalinterpreting,especiallyindevelopingcountrieswhereprofessionalSLinterpretersareinurgentneed．TiffsthesishasdrawnexperiencesfromtheUnitedStatesandAustraliainthisfieldfromsixaspects：legalsystem，guild，accreditation，codeofethics，socialstatusandremuneration，

6、andsupplyanddemandnetwork．BasedonasurveyofthestatusquoofSLinterpretinginmainlandChina，thethesisexploreshowtodrawexperiencesfromforeigncounterpartstoacceleratetheprofessionalismofSLinterpretinginthecontextofmainlandChina．Thisthesisisorganizedalongfiveinterconnectedchapters．ChapterIis
