2、edia(CM)e-mail,suchasaudioandvideo.Weassertthattheproblemisnotsimplyamatterofaddingtheobviousnewfunctionalitytouseragents(mailreaders),suchasaudioandvideocapture,butrequirestheadoptionofanewdeliverymodel.Wedothisbyexaminingtheproblemsthatariseusingcurrentmethodstodelivervideomessa

3、ges,andweshowhowsender-sidestorageandmediastreamingsolvetheseproblems.Finally,wedescribeanimplementationstrategythatrequireschangesonlytoindividualsendersystems,butenablesCMe-mailtobedelivereduniversallytoanyrecipient,thusprovidingarealisticevolutionarypaththatcanbeadoptedincremen

4、tallybyindividualmailsystems.1IntroductionInternete-mail,introducedinthe1970s,wastheInternet'srstkillerapplication.ItistheoriginalapplicationthatprovokeduserinterestintheInternet,andithasnowbecomeacommonxtureofmodernsociety,bothintheworkplaceandinthehome.Upthroughtheearly1990s,a

5、lmostallInternete-mailwasinsimpleASCII.Butinrecentyears,e-mailuseragents(mailreaders)havebecomeMIMEcompatible,andarethereforecapabletoalimiteddegreeofcreatingandrenderinge-mailmessageswithmultimediacontent.ParallelingtheMIMEdevelopments,therehasbeenincreasedintegrationofthee-mailu

6、seragent(UA)andWebbrowser.Forexample,mailreadersnowparsetextmessagesforURLs,andrenderthemashyperlinkswhich,whenclickedupon,launchacompanionWebbrowserthatretrievesanddisplaysthereferencedpage.1Thus,e-mailsystemshaveaccesstothemultimediastreamingandrenderingtechnologythathasbeendeve

7、lopedfortheWeb.AlthoughtheMIMEstandardhasbeenwidelyadoptedbye-mailuseragents,thevastmajorityofthee-mailmessagessenttodayarevoidofcontinuous-media(CM)content,suchasaudioandvideo.ThelackofCMcontentine-mailmessagesisclearlynotduetolackofuserinterest.Indeed,therearemanycontextsinwhich
