3、oricaldeviceinwhichoneentityissubstitutedbyanotherentity.Metonymyemphasizesontherelativitybetweenthetwoentities,whilemetaphorfocusesonthesimilaritybetweenthetwoentities.FromtheperiodofAristotle,metonymyandmetaphorhavealreadybeenregardedasrhetoricaldevi

4、ces,andplayedanimportantroleinenhancingeloquenceandobtainingtherhetoricaleffect.Thetraditionalrecognitionsonmetonymymainlyincludetherhetoricalperspectiveonmetonymy,thestructuralistperspectiveonmetonymyandthepragmaticperspectiveonmetonymy.Becauseoftheir

5、limitations,allofthestudiesfromthethreeperspectivescannotmakefurtherexplanationformetonymy,andisnothelpfulfortheunderstandingofmetonymyinamuchdeeperlevel.ThecognitiveapproachesonmetonymymainlybaseontheRelevanceTheory,theSalienceTheory,theCognitiveFunct

6、ionandICMModel.Comparedwiththetraditionalperspectivesonmetonymy,thecognitiveapproacheshavealreadymadeagreatbreakthroughtosomeextent.However,theirpurposestillfocusesonthefunctionofmetonymyandthemethodtounderstandmetonymybetter.Inthispaper,theresearchonE

7、nglishmetonymyisfromtheperspectiveofAdaptationTheorywhichwillprovideanewperspectiveforthemetonymyresearch.ThispapertakesthemetonymyinthebookAdvancedEnglishasthedatainordertoresearchtheformingmechanismofthemetonymyphenomenon.Accordingtothequalitativeana

8、lysisofthedata,itcanbeconcludedthattheprocessthattheAdaptationTheoryoperatesisconsistentwiththeprocessthattheEnglishmetonymyforms.Theformingmechanismofmetonymyinthebroadsensecanbeconsideredasthechoicemakingatvariouslevels,thevariability
