3、losephylogenetic(naturalevolutionary)relationshipbetweenthetwogroups.DNAcomparisonshaveshownthatgreenalgaeareplants’closestlivingrelatives.Inaddition,otherlinesofevidencesupportthehypothesisthatlandplantsevolvedfromancestralgreenalgaeusedthesametypeofchl

4、orophyllandaccessorypigmentsinphotosynthesisasdolandplants.Thiswouldnotbetrueofredandbrownalgae.Greenalgaestorefoodasstarch,asdolandplantsandhavecellwallsmadeofcellulose,similarincompositiontothoseoflandplants.Again,thegoodstorageandcellwallmoleculesofre

5、dandbrownalgaearedifferent.  Todaygreenalgaelivemainlyinfreshwater,suggestingthattheirearlyevolutionaryhistorymayhaveoccurredinfreshwaterhabitats.Ifso,thegreenalgaewouldhavebeensubjectedtoenvironmentalpressuresthatresultedinadaptationsthatenhancedtheirpo

6、tentialtogiverisetoland-dwellingororganisms.  Theenvironmentalconditionsoffreshwaterhabitats,unlikethoseofoceanhabitats,arehighlyvariable.Watertemperaturecanfluctuateseasonallyorevendailyandchanginglevelofrainfallcanleadtofluctuationsintheconcentrationof
