3、fromtheclosephylogenetic(naturalevolutionary)relationshipbetweenthetwogroups.DNAcomparisonshaveshownthatgreenalgaeareplants’closestlivingrelatives.Inaddition,otherlinesofevidencesupportthehypothesisthatlandplantsevolvedfromancestralgreenalgaeusedthes

4、ametypeofchlorophyllandaccessorypigmentsinphotosynthesisasdolandplants.Thiswouldnotbetrueofredandbrownalgae.Greenalgaestorefoodasstarch,asdolandplantsandhavecellwallsmadeofcellulose,similarincompositiontothoseoflandplants.Again,thegoodstorageandcellw

5、allmoleculesofredandbrownalgaearedifferent.  Todaygreenalgaelivemainlyinfreshwater,suggestingthattheirearlyevolutionaryhistorymayhaveoccurredinfreshwaterhabitats.Ifso,thegreenalgaewouldhavebeensubjectedtoenvironmentalpressuresthatresultedinadaptation

6、sthatenhancedtheirpotentialtogiverisetoland-dwellingororganisms.  Theenvironmentalconditionsoffreshwaterhabitats,unlikethoseofoceanhabitats,arehighlyvariable.Watertemperaturecanfluctuateseasonallyorevendailyandchanginglevelofrainfallcanleadtofluctuat

7、ionsintheconcentrationofchemicalinthewateroreventoperiodinwhichtheaquatichabitatdriesup.Ancientfreshwatergreenalgaemusthaveevolvedfeaturesthatenablethemtowithstandextremesoftemperatureandperiodsofdryness.Theseadaptationsservedtheirdescendantwellasthe
