3、rentmodes,suchasimages,colors,sounds,etc.Thosemeansbreakthesinglenessoflanguagesignsandmaketheexpressionofmeaningricherandmorecomplete.Therefore,multimodalityprovidesadistinctiveperspectiveforcomprehensiveunderstandingofnewsdiscourse.Smogrelatednewsisnotonlyaneffectivechannelforthepublict
4、oacquiretheweatherinformation,aswellasthecausesofsmog,theparticipationandactioninsmogcontrol,butalsodeploydifferentsemioticresourcestorepresentthecompletemeaning.ThestudyappliesvanLeeuwen‘s(2008)socialactorrepresentationastheoreticalframework.Tensmog-relatednewsreportswhichareselectedfrom
5、ChinaDailyandTheWashingtonPost’swebsitesareusedasthedata.Then,therepresentedparticipantsineachnewsreportswerecategorizedaccordingtotheirfunction;thevisualandverbalresourceswhichrelaterepresentationofsocialparticipantswereselectedformultimodalanalysis.Theresultsshowthatalargecoverageofrepo
6、rtsinChinaDailypresentstheoccurrenceofsmoginvariousregions,andmadeanalysisonthecauses.Inaddition,theChinesegovernmenthasadoptedaseriesoftreatmentmeasures,whichshowsthattheChinesegovernmentattachesgreatimportancetoenvironmentalissuesandtheeffectivenessandmaturityofthetreatmentmechanism.Int
