2、smechanizedcut-and–fillmining.Thisminingmethodcurrentlyproducesabout50%oftheannualproductionandhasproventobesafeandeconomical.ASaresult,theHomestakeMineremainscompetitiveintoday’smarket.IntroductionTheHomestakeMine,locatedintheBlackHillsofSouthDakota,ha
3、salonghistorydatingbackto1876,Inthe113yearsofitsexistence,avarietyofminingmethodshavebeenappliedtotheorebodies.Someofthemoretraditionalmethodsincludedopencut-and-fill,shrinkage,aquare-set,blockcavingandblastholesublevelmining.Duetoincreasingcostsandoreb
4、odycomplexities,newandinnovativeminingmethodshadtobedeveloped.Asaresult,mechanizedcut-and-fillwasintroducedtomineerraticorezonesandoreareaswithdipstooshalloweffectiverecoveryusingverticalcraterretreatminingtechniques.Mechanizedcut-and-fillminingconsists
5、ofinterconnectingaseriesofsmallorezonesaccessiblewithacommonramp.Thisaffordstheflexibilityofmultipleoreheadingstoensureconsistentproductionandhighequipmentuse.GeologyTheHomestakeorebodyiscomprisedofmetasedimentsalterdthroughprogressiveregionalmetamorphi
6、sm.ThreemainPrecambrianrockformationsconsistingoftheoldestPoormanformation,theintermediateHomestakeformation,andtheyoungestEllisonformation,areintricatelyfoldedintoaseriesofsynclinesandanticlinesplunging10to80southeastanddipping65to70northeastontheavera
7、ge.Additionally,Tertiaryrhyolitesandphonolitesresultingfromintrusiveactivitycutacrossallthreeformations.TheHomestakeformatiom,whichhostsallore-grademineralization,isasideroplesite-grunerite-quartzschist.Orebodiesarereplacementpipesorientedparalleltofold
8、plungesandthegoldiserraticallyassociatedwithquartz,arsenopyriteandpyrrhotite.Theseorezones,whichstrike35northwest,canrangefrom3to30minwidthand9to152minlength.Mineralizationmaycommonlyextendfor91mdown50to80dips.Compressivestrength
