2、Thisminingmethodcurrentlyproducesabout50%oftheannualproductionandhasproventobesafeandeconomical.ASaresult,theHomestakeMineremainscompetitiveintoday’smarket.IntroductionTheHomestakeMine,locatedintheBlackHillsofSouthDakota,hasalonghistorydatingbackto1876,Inthe113yearsofitsexistence,av
3、arietyofminingmethodshavebeenappliedtotheorebodies.Someofthemoretraditionalmethodsincludedopencut-and-fill,shrinkage,aquare-set,blockcavingandblastholesublevelmining.Duetoincreasingcostsandorebodycomplexities,newandinnovativeminingmethodshadtobedeveloped.Asaresult,mechanizedcut-and-
4、fillwasintroducedtomineerraticorezonesandoreareaswithdipstooshalloweffectiverecoveryusingverticalcraterretreatminingtechniques.Mechanizedcut-and-fillminingconsistsofinterconnectingaseriesofsmallorezonesaccessiblewithacommonramp.Thisaffordstheflexibilityofmultipleoreheadingstoensurec
5、onsistentproductionandhighequipmentuse.GeologyTheHomestakeorebodyiscomprisedofmetasedimentsalterdthroughprogressiveregionalmetamorphism.ThreemainPrecambrianrockformationsconsistingoftheoldestPoormanformation,theintermediateHomestakeformation,andtheyoungestEllisonformation,areintrica
6、telyfoldedintoaseriesofsynclinesandanticlinesplunging10to80southeastanddipping65to70northeastontheaverage.Additionally,Tertiaryrhyolitesandphonolitesresultingfromintrusiveactivitycutacrossallthreeformations.TheHomestakeformatiom,whichhostsallore-grademineralization,isasideroplesite-
7、grunerite-quartzschist.Orebodiesarereplacementpipesorientedparalleltofoldplungesandthegoldiserraticallyassociatedwithquartz,arsenopyriteandpyrrhotite.Theseorezones,whichstrike35northwest,canrangefrom3to30minwidthand9to152minlength.Mineralizationmaycommonlyextendfor91mdown50to80dips.
