3、groupsinBangliangNatureReserveinJingxiCounty,ChinabetweenJanuary2008andDecember2009totestfourhypothesesrelatedtosleepingtreeselection(predationavoidance,thermoregulation,foodaccess,andrangedefense).Gibbonsenteredsleepingtrees88±SD37minbeforesunsetbeforetheirmainpotentialnocturnalpr

4、edatorbecomeactive.Theyusuallymovedrapidlyandstraighttosleepingtreesandkeptsilentoncesettled.Overthecourseofthestudy,gibbongroupsusedmany(87and57pergroup)sleepingtreesandreusedthemirregularly.Theyalsotendedtosleepinrelativelytalltreeswithoutlianas,choosingsmallbranchesclosetothetre

5、etop.Thesebehaviorswouldmakeitdifficultforpotentialterrestrialpredatorstodetectandapproachthegibbons.Therefore,theseresultsstronglysupportthepredationavoidancehypothesis.Gibbonstendedtosleepclosertoridgesthantovalleybottomsandtheydidnotsleepatlowerelevationsincoldermonths.Theythusap

6、pearednottoselectsleepingtreestominimizethermoregulatorystress.Gibbonsveryrarelysleptinfeedingtrees,insteadgenerallysleepingmorethan100mawayfromthelastfeedingtreesofthedayorthefirstfeedingtreeofthenextmorning.Thesepatternsledustorejectthefoodaccesshypothesis.Lastly,wedidnotfindeviden
