3、heSR-71Blackbirdreconnaissanceplane.TwoYF-12ÕswereflowninajointAirForce-NASAresearchprogramattheNASAFlightResearchCenter(after1976,theNASADrydenFlightResearchCenter)between1969and1979.Athirdsharedplane,pilotedprimarilybytheAirForce,waslosttoanin-flightfirein1971.TheYF-12allowedNASAres
4、earchersatallfouroftheagencyÕsaeronauticalcenters(Langley,Lewis[nowGlenn],andAmesaswellastheFlightResearchCenter)tostudythethermal,structural,andaerodynamiceffectsofsustained,high-altitude,Mach3flight.Paintedflatblack,theYF-12wasfabricatedprimarilyfromLockheedwasalsodevelopingÒalong-r
5、angeadvancedtitaniumalloy,whichenabledittowithstandskintempera-strategicreconnaissanceplaneformilitaryuse,capableofturesofover500¼F.world-widereconnaissanceformilitaryoperations.ÓThatplane,theSR-71,wasamodifiedversionoftheYF-12.WorkontheYF-12beganinsecretinthelate1950ÕsattheAlthoughhe
6、avierthantheYF-12,theSR-71ÒspyplaneÓLockheedAdvancedDevelopmentProjectsoffice,betterashadalongerrangeandwascapableofstrategicsurveil-knowntheÒSkunkWorks,ÓinBurbank,CA.Flightdatalance.ThisspyplanewasadoptedbythemilitaryandtheremainedclassifiedlongafterPresidentLyndonJohnsonYF-12wasnot.
7、UsurpedbyademandforitssuccessorÕsannouncedtheplaneÕsexistenceonFeb.29,1964.Aftercapabilities,theexperimentalYF-12Õswereessentiallytheannouncement,theplanereceivedtheAirForcedesig-shelveduntil1969,whentwoofthemweredeployedasnationYF-12A.researchvehiclesattheNASAFlightResearchCenter.(Th
