2、.ItisalsoanessentialrequirementinSeniorHighSchoolEnglishCurriculumStandard(2003).Englishreadingisthemostimportantwayforthestudentsinseniorhighschoolstobroadentheirminds,accumulatevocabularyandgrammarknowledge,equipthemselveswithsentencepatternsandimprovetheirwritingskillsaswell.Deve

3、lopingstudents'readingcompetenceisatoppriorityofEnglishteachingaimsinseniorhighschool.However,thereadingabilityofmanystudentsisnotsatisfactory.Oneofthereasonsforthatisthetraditionalreadingteachingmethodwhichisbasedongrammartranslation.Schemaincludescontentschema,linguisticandformals

4、chema.Therefore,theauthorofthisthesismadeanattempttoactivate,developandconsolidatestudents'schemaandinvestigatewhetherschema-orientedreadingteachingiseffectiveinimprovingstudents'readingcompetence.Theauthorcarriedoutanexperimentlastingfourmonths'time.Twoparallelclassesinsenioronewer

5、echosen.Intheexperimentalclass,theauthoradoptedschema-orientedreadingteaching,whichfocusedonactivating,developingandconsolidatingstudents'contentschema.Whileinthecontrolclass,theauthorkeptonadoptingthetraditionalwayofteaching,whichconcentratedontheexplanationoflanguagepoints.Theteac

6、hingmodelintheexperimentalclasswasasfollows:pre-readingstage—activatingandbuildingschema;while-readingstage—developingschema;post-reading:stage—consolidatingschema.Theauthorraisedthehypothesisthatschema-basedreadingteachingiseffectiveindevelopingstudents'readingcompetence,atthesamet

7、ime,studentshavemorebackgroundknowledgethanbeforeandstudents'awarenessofusingbackgroundknowledgehasbeenimproved.Accordingtothedatacollectedthroughpre-testandpost-test,andrelatedquestionnairesandinterviewaswell,itcanbeseenthatthehypothesisofthisstudyhadbeentestedtobecorrect.Keywords:
