5、anosecondpulsestotransmitinformation.Implementinganall-digitalUWBre-ceiverhasnumerousbenefitsrangingfromlowcostandeaseofdesigntoflexibility.DigitizinganRFsignalneartheantenna,however,introducesitsownsetofchal-lengesandhastraditionallybeenconsideredinfeasible.Ahigh-speed,high-resolu
6、tionanalog-digitalconverter(ADC)isdifficulttodesign,andisextremelypower-hungry.However,duetotheuniquespectralcharacteristicsofUWBsignalsandtheirnoiseenviroment,itcanbeshownthatreliabledetectionofaUWBsignalisachievablewithveryfewbitsofresolutionintheADC.Inthisthesis,theroleofquantiz
7、ationnoiseinUWBsystemsisanalyzedandthesufficiencyof4bitsofprecisionisdemonstrated.Dataconversionatseveralgigasamples/sec(GSPS)isneverthelesschallenging,evenatlowresolutions.Thefeasibilityofthisproblemhasbeeninvestigatedthroughthedesignandimplementationofa4-bit,4GSPSADCforaprototype
