2、targetedatstudentsandresearcherswritingtechnicalandbusinessreports,buttheprinciplesarerelevanttoanyformofwriting,includinglettersandmemos.Therefore,thedocumentcontainsvaluablelessonsforanybodywishingtoimprovetheirwritingskills.Theideasdescribedhereare,apartfromfairlyminorexceptions,notoriginal.
3、TheyaredrawnfromarangeofexcellentbooksandhavealsobeeninfluencedbyvariousoutstandingauthorsIhaveworkedwith.Thus,theapproachrepresentsakindofmodernconsensus.ThisapproachisverydifferenttothestylethatwaspromotedbythetraditionalEnglishschools’system,whichencouragedstudentstowriteinanunnecessarilycom
4、plexandformalway.Theapproachdescribedhereemphasisessimplicity(‘plainEnglish’)andinformality.Forexample,itencouragesshortersentencesanduseofthesimplestwordsandphrasespossible.Itexplainshowyoucanachievesimplicitybyusingtheactiveratherthanthepassivestyle,personalratherthanimpersonalstyle,andbyavoi
