1、AbstractIn21甜century,therareearthmetalsandrelatedcompoundsbecamenecessarymaterialsthankstoarapiddevelopinghigh—techindustry,aswellasthedemandalsoincreasedsharply．TheannualdemandinSouthKoreawasapproximately3．7milliondollarsin1986；48milliondollarsin1997；70milliondollarsin2002．Particularly，usage

2、intheindustryofinformationandcommunicationwasremarkable．Thedemandisexpectedtobeincrease，duetogrowingtheusageoffluorescentmaterialandmagnetinhigh—techindustry．Since2000，theChinesegovernmenthasimposedrestrictionpolicyontheproductionandexportsofrareearthmetals，butSouthKoreahasnotclearlysetcounte

3、rmeasuresagainstit．Currently,SouthKoreaCanbarelymanagetoproductlightrareearthabrasiveswithKorea’Sapplicationtechnologyandequipment，eventhoughtherareearthresourcesarethemainrawmaterialinKorea’Shigh-techindustry．ThereforeSouthKoreashouldsecurerelevantapplicationtechnologyandequipmenttomakethese

4、products，sincethedemandonendproducts，suchasmetallicalloyforhydrogenstorageorhigh—qualityabrasivesusingcerium，isrising．ThepaperdidananalysisofSouthKorea’Sdemandforrareearthsandrelatedmarket，andshowstheimportanceofrareearthresourcesintheKoreaeconomy，especiallyinthehightechindustries，andcomeupwi
