5、.TheEnglishcausativeconstructionisthecorrespondinglinguisticrepresentationofthecausativesemanticcategoryaswellasthemappingorconceptualizationofthecausativeeventsexistinginthephysicalworldthatisstructuredbyavarietyofcauses,whichmakesthecausativeconstr

6、uctionauniversallinguisticexpressioninhumanlanguages.Withintheframeworkofgrammaticalmetonymy,thecurrentthesishascarriedoutastudyofthecognitivemotivationunderlyingtheEnglishcausativeconstruction.Specificresearchproblemsincludethecognitivemodelsofgramm

7、aticalmetonymybehindnoun-verbconversion,adjective-verbconversion,causativizationofintransitiveverbsandtransitiveverbswithoutthecausativemeaningaswellasthesubjectchange,andtheoperationalprocessofgrammaticalmetonymytoresolvethesemanticconflictbetweenth

8、emeaningoftheconstructionandthatofinsertedlexicalitems.Themajorfindingsofthisthesisarerepresentedasfollows.Firstly,thethesisrevealsthatthecognitivemodelsofgrammaticalmetonymyworkasthecognitivefoundationbehindthenoun-verbconversion,adjective-verbconve
