2、hu,jyue,zcai,segee}@eece.maine.eduAbstractRandomaccessesaregenerallyharmfultoperfor-provideextraordinarilyfastperformanceforworkloadswithmanceinharddiskdrivesduetomoredramaticmechanicalintensiverandomaccesses.Suchworkloadsarenotoriouslymovement.Thispaperpresentsthedesign,implementation,andharmfulto
3、performanceforharddisks.ThiskeyadvantageevaluationofHotRandomOff-loading(HRO),aself-optimizinggivesusanexcitingopportunitytobuildahybridsystemhybridstoragesystemthatusesafastandsmallSSDasaby-passablecachetoharddisks,withagoaltoserveamajoritycomposedofoneormoreslowbutlarge-capacityharddisk(s)ofrando
4、mI/OaccessesfromthefastSSD.HROdynamicallyandasmallbutfastSSD.ThecapacityoftheSSDinsuchestimatestheperformancebenefitsbasedonhistoryaccessahybridstoragesystemcanbeassmallas1%ofthediskpatterns,especiallytherandomnessandthehotness,ofindividualcapacity.Forexample,itmayconsistofaSSDwithacapacityfiles,andt
5、henusesa0-1knapsackmodeltoallocateormigrateofonlytengigabytesanddiskswithmultipleterabytes.ThefilesbetweentheharddisksandtheSSD.HROcaneffectivelyidentifyfilesthataremorefrequentlyandrandomlyaccessedhybridstorageleveragesthefastrandomaccessperformanceinandplacethesefilesontheSSD.Weimplementaprototypeof
6、SSDstoboosttheoverallI/OperformancewithoutgeneratingHROinLinuxandourimplementationistransparenttotherestalargecostoverhead.ofthestoragestack,includingapplicationsandfilesystems.WeThekeychallengingresearchissueinsuchahybridstorageevaluateitsperformancebydirectlyreplayingthreereal-worldsystemishowtody
7、namicallyallocateormigratedatabetweentracesonourprototype.ExperimentsdemonstratethatHROimprovestheoverallI/Othroughputupto39%andthelatencytheSSDandthedisksinordertoachievetheoptimalperfor-upto23%.mancegain.
