6、ansformedawartornbackwaterintoacomfortablemiddleincomecountry.Thatreverenceextendstothegreatpatriarchswhoturnedthechaebolintomightyindustrialmachines.Butdoubtsarecreepingin.SouthKoreaputsgreatemphasisonupwardmobilityandsocialsolidarity,yetthecountryisincreasinglyruledbyacoll
7、ectionofoldfamilieswhosemembersmarryeachotherandinheritallthebestjobs.Theconcentrationofwealthproducesarangeofotherproblems.Politicalcronyismisrife.Corporategovernanceisshoddy,withchaebolfamiliesexercisingpowerthroughconvolutedownershipstructures.ThechairmenofSamsung,Hyundai
