3、cturesatColumbiaUniversityinApril1980.Hehopeseventuallytoreworkalltheselecturesintoashortbook.THETANNERLECTURESONHUMANVALUESAppointmentasaTannerlecturerisarecognitionofuncom-moncapabilitiesandoutstandingscholarlyorleadershipachieve-mentinthefieldofhumanvalues.Thelecturersmaybedrawnfromphilosophy,rel
4、igion,thehumanitiesandsciences,thecreativeartsandlearnedprofessions,orfromleadershipinpublicorprivateaffairs.Thelectureshipsareinternationalandinterculturalandtranscendethnic,national,religious,orideologicaldistinctions.ThepurposeoftheTannerLecturesistoadvanceandreflectuponthescholarlyandscientificl
5、earningrelatingtohumanvaluesandvaluation.Thispurposeembracestheentirerangeofvaluespertinenttothehumancondition,interest,behavior,andaspiration.TheTannerLectureswereformallyfoundedonJuly1,1978,atClareHall,CambridgeUniversity.TheywereestablishedbytheAmericanscholar,industrialist,andphilanthropist,Ober
6、tClarkTanner.Increatingthelectureships,ProfessorTannersaid,“Ihopetheselectureswillcontributetotheintellectualandmorallifeofmankind.Iseethemsimplyasasearchforabetterunderstandingofhumanbehaviorandhumanvalues.Thisunderstandingmaybepursuedforitsownintrinsicworth,butitmayalsoeventuallyhavepracticalconse
