2、edintoitsregionalconservationplanningefforts.ThetoolsgenerateGISdataandattributesthatsupportaregional-scaleclassificationoffreshwatersystemsandanalysisofthepotentialintegrityofthesesamesystems.TheyhavebeenimplementedbyTNCinmorethan30ecoregionsacrosstheU.S.,andworkisexpandingtoinclude
3、otherpartsoftheAmericas.Thetoolsarenowintheirseconditeration.WhilethefirstversionofthetoolsworkedonlywiththeRF3hydrographydatasetavailableintheU.S.,thesecondversionismoreflexibleandwillfunctionwithavarietyofdatasets.Futureimprovementsinthetoolscouldincludeanimprovedinterfaceandimprov
4、edalgorithmstoreducedatapre-processingneeds.TheGIStools,documentation,anddatafromcompletedecoregionsarenowpubliclyavailableontheInternet.1IntroductionRegionalconservationplanningforfreshwaterbiodiversityrequiresmappedinforma-tiononconservationtargetsandthreatsatarelativelyfinescale.B
5、ecausespecializedattributesmustbedevelopedwhileefficientlyprocessinglargeamountsofdata,theplanningprocessisgreatlyfacilitatedbytheuseofcustomizedGIStools.TheNatureConservancy(TNC)hasdevelopedasetofGIStoolsthatgeneratedataandattributesthatcanthenbeusedtoconductaregional-scaleecologica
6、lclassificationoffreshwatersystemsandtoanalyzethepotentialecologicalintegrityofthesesamesystems.ThesetoolsweredevelopedtoaidinTNC’secoregionalassessmentprocess,thepurposeofwhichistoidentifyasetofconservationareasthatbestrepresentsthenativespecies,communities,andecosystemsofanecoregio
