5、thatarebasedonthattheory.Sowhatisatheoryoflanguage?Manyyearsago,J.R.Firthcharacterizedlinguisticsas"languageturnedbackonitself";andwhathesaidaboutusinglanguagetodescribelanguageinThesemanticsoflinguisticscience(in1948,Lingua)isstillveryrelevant:Letitbeborneinmindthatlanguageisoftenno

6、tveryaptwhenusedaboutitself,evenintechnicallinguisticstudies.Ifwepausetoconsiderthestylisticsofthelanguageofthecommonsensuallife,wecanbesureitwillnotserveasthelanguageforlinguisticscience.Thetechnicallanguageforthesystematicstatementoffactsoflanguagecannot,anymorethanformathematics,b
